Vegan Cheese Sauce

Giving up cheese is one of the things that people most commonly talk about when it comes to difficulties of becoming vegan. Although you can always cook without it, and replacements are becoming more and more readily available, it is nice to have a few tricks up your sleeve. This vegan cheese sauce is one such trick.

Nutritional yeast is often used in recipes to add a cheesy sort of flavor, so I decided to experiment with this. With a bit of trail and error I was able to come up with this vegan cheese sauce that is not just passable, but very good.

It is not a replacement for cheese itself, but as a topping on vegetables such as broccoli or cauliflower it is very good. It is also a great topper for nachos, or you can use it to cheese up some vegan pizza. With a bit of clever thinking and some fun experimenting in the kitchen there is no end of ideas this recipe can be used for.

You will need:

  • ¼ cup of Nutritional Yeast
  • 1 cup of Water
  • 2 tbsp Flour
  • 1 tbsp Starch
  • 1 tsp Salt
  • ½ tsp Turmeric
  • 1 tsp Garlic Powder
  • 1 tsp Dried Mustard
  • 2 tbsp Vegan Margarine

To Make Vegan Cheese Sauce:

This is a super easy recipe to make. Simply add all of the ingredients into a small sauce pan and stir with a whisk to make sure they are fully blended.

You can use whatever starch you prefer, I generally use arrowroot, but corn starch and most others work just as well.

Continue to stir while heating the sauce to a low boil. It should begin to thicken just after it begins to boil.

Remove from the burner and let it cool for a minute or two and it is ready to serve. Now throw it on top of those vegetables, or stirfy, or nachos and get ready to get your munch on.

  2. How much garlic powder and mustard? It doesn’t say how many, or much of, a tsp.
